As I look back on the first 30 years of my life in retrospect, there isn't a lot different that I would have done. Every single thing that happens to us shapes who we are and who we are becoming. Each passing second offers new opportunities to forge your path and make what you want out of this world.
What I want out of this world has never changed much. I don't know if everyone wants the same things I do but you may or may not be interested to know so in no particular order here they are.
I want to be happy. I find that the best way to do this is by helping others realize their full potential. To serve others in a way that enables them to realize their full potential. I want peace and prosperity in this world. I want to create. Create a life that works for 100% of everyone. Create art, and knowledge and culture. Create a sense of community and a respect for all mankind. I want to achieve the American dream, but that, to me, means bringing back access to the American dream for all mankind. Its a dream we all share. The internet proved we want to be connected together. Proved that ethnocentricity doesn't work. Proved that with the right methods of communication that we can come together for the common good.
The common good isn't about being socialists or communists. It isn't about the left vs right paradigm. Its not a libertarian vs liberal vs conservative. These are all terms that divide. Meaningful connections are whats important to me. My kids are the most important connections I have. The common good means helping each other improve and get better daily. Doing something each day that you can be proud of. Doing something each day that you can look at and say, if this thing I did helped make a difference in one persons life than I am doing my part to fix this world.
Common good is about carrying your weight. Its about getting off the couch, away from that TV and doing something. Making something. Leave your legacy through service to others. We can change the world, but in order to do so you have to first get out of what may be your comfort zone and realize that life isn't about the possessions we consume but its about letting helping others consume you!
Its about being informed and doing your part. In order to be the change we want to see in this world, direct and reasonable action needs to occur. We need to look past the partisan bickering and find common ground for the common good.
We need to look for new ways to learn and grow as a race. To realize the problems we face and not be scared to face them head on. In these hard times for all it is up to us to create the new world that works for everyone. Its far past the time, 2012 is here. Its now. The most urgent question is, what are you doing for others?
Have a wonderful 2012 everyone! I know I will :)
